Nature Speaks

It's like a dream.  Even here at my little cabin in the woods half way around the world there's a certain glow in the air.  On this glorious, sun-sparkled day, the leaves look greener, the birds are chirping with renewed vigour, the breeze has settled into a gentle whisper.  It's as if all of nature is revelling in the warm-fuzziness of an Obama victory.  Even in Toronto, usually frigid and forlorn this time of year, the thermometer sits at a pleasant 8 degrees celsius and the coming dawn promises a day of rapturous warmth - 20 degrees and sunny...in November!

Pathetic fallacy has never had a finer moment!  Whether you believe in these sorts of things or not, there is no denying the power of symbolism.

Washington D.C.: rainy and cold - those neo-cons must be feeling the creeping chill of death

Alaska: Cold, cold, cold - ahhh Palin!  Did you ever believe it would be any different?

Baghdad: Sunny and pleasant - yes, pleasant...22 degrees in the desert, as if the oppressive heat of war is on the wane

Kabul: Sunny and warm with a sprinkling of clouds - it's a fragile hope, the intimation of a new dawn

Islamabad: hot and muggy - well, Obama has promised to bomb Pakistan

The Earth maps its own political commentary.  Risking hyperbole, I say we take mother nature at her word and tentatively allow ourselves some measure of hope.  If America can so monumentally shift its vision for a new world order, surely we can give it a chance.

Pathetic fallacy...Mr Khan...its been oppressively raining here in Scotland.. We can't believe in that here, we'd be permanently depressed. I asked a bunch of 14 year olds if the election changed the world.

Student: "of course"
Me: "How?"
Student: "What do I look like, a crystal ball? It just WILL. "

Smart-ass 14-year olds. I'm actually a little worried. Obama Takes on one of the most difficult presidencies in the history of the United States. People expect him to be some kind of prophet. What'll happen when everyone realizes he's just human being? What if he doesn't monumentally change the world? Will we vilify him? I'm sure there are some neo-cons in Washington gleefully rubbing their hands together, thanking god that they don't have to deal with the U.S. for the next four years and planning the Republican comeback on the back of what will likely be the dashed hopes of the American people. Obama is not a god; we shouldn't expect him to be one.
